Organs / Bones

This piece is about the two ways that the body can be perceived. On the left, there is a mass of organs carved from a block of wax, with shellac and gold leaf. On the right, there is a ball of bones carved from stone, that morph into one another. The organs represent the profane, or disgusting and the bones represent the sacred. I find it interesting that both of these layers, although at odds, manage to exist together within the body.

Piece I completed for my midterm. Figure created from found wood "spine," paper, shellac and plexi rod "ribcage," pelvis from plastiline clay, found stool, "skull" is a carved apple that has been dried out. "Organs" hanging behind the figure are made from cast dragon skin, and the intestines are gold painted plaster.

This piece incorporated a lot of different elements for me. I combined a pseudo medical examination table, along with 3 "organs" made of wax that were fitted with many LEDs and a distance sensor, along with a "heart" in the center. The organs would pulse with a heart beat rhythm until the viewer would step closer, and then a bright "examination" light would snap on suddenly illuminating the piece, especially the heart.

I contrast or combine the medical imagery with the altar like draping of the latex sheeting, which is pinned together over the table like a body is sewn up after an autopsy.

This piece starts to speak about the way religion and medicine refer to the body, something that occurs a lot in my work, along with where they are able to work together, and where they are very separate.

Fun little piece I made in a night, the lock and chain are completely suspended by the string and nails. Becomes some sort of strange landscape. 1 and 1/2 to 2 ft tall and about 1 ft wide.

A lot of my work deals with mortality, and a view of the body as something that will eventually break down. I created this fragmented relief of the human circulatory system with a repetitive, and extremely tiring method of hammering nails into a board; a process which wore on both my body and my mind. However, I wanted to resulting work to be something that transcended the labor required to create it, and to transform into something that was less concrete than a simple depiction of the human circulatory system. The nails symbolize stars or a constellation in the night sky, something huge and eternal, and perhaps even sacred, contrasted with the insignificant human body, or the profane. I wanted to combine both the sacred and the profane in one body that is simultaneously the night sky, and a partial depiction of the human circulatory system.
